I offer safe and secure video Telehealth sessions in California Only.
You need and deserve a therapist who gets you, understands and validates your life experiences and unique strengths.
Growing up and living as LGBTQ+ in Orange County can be complicated. Family expectations, culture, religion, and community norms all shape how safe it feels to be yourself. You deserve a therapist who understands this context and respects your identity without question.
I’m Jim Brillon, LMFT #100807 / LPCC #5081, a licensed therapist providing LGBTQ+ and gay-affirmative therapy from my offices in Los Alamitos (90720) and Costa Mesa (92626), serving clients across Orange County, California and throughout the state via telehealth.
If you’ve ever felt like you had to educate your therapist about what it means to be gay, bi, trans, non-binary, or queer, you’re not alone. Many of my clients arrive in therapy feeling:
My practice is intentionally LGBTQ+ affirming. You are not the problem. Oppression, stigma, and unsafe systems are often where the pain begins. In our work, your identity is not questioned or pathologized. It is respected as an essential part of who you are.
LGBTQ+ affirming therapy begins with the belief that your sexual orientation and gender identity are valid and not something that needs to be changed. Instead, we look at how stress, stigma, and life experiences have affected your mental health, relationships, and sense of self.
In my Orange County practice, affirming therapy:
This perspective is valuable for LGBTQ+ clients and also for straight and cisgender clients who want a therapist who is aware of power, privilege, and social context.
Yes. When you meet with me in Los Alamitos, Costa Mesa, or online, what you share is confidential and protected by law with the usual limits of safety. I take privacy seriously so you can speak freely about your relationships, identity, and lived experience.
As a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist and Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, I follow professional and ethical standards to create a safe space for you.
While my offices are in Los Alamitos and Costa Mesa, I provide telehealth therapy for adults across California. Many of my clients live or work in nearby Orange County communities such as Irvine, Huntington Beach, Santa Ana, Anaheim, and Newport Beach.
LGBTQ+ people face many of the same struggles as straight people – depression, anxiety, grief, work stress, family conflict – but often for different reasons. Growing up in a largely heteronormative world can create chronic stress, even when “things look fine” on the surface.
Some of the challenges we might explore together include:
I have spent years working with LGBTQ+ clients in Orange County and throughout California. My approach is grounded, relational, and trauma-aware. I am not here to tell you who you should be. I am here to listen closely, reflect honestly, and help you connect with the parts of you that already know what you need.
If you are interested in couples counseling or exploring your relationships, we can also integrate couples therapy into our work when appropriate.
You don’t have to figure this out alone. Let’s take the first step together. Call so we can schedule a consultation.
At Jim Brillon Therapy, you do not have to translate your life to make it understandable. You won’t need to justify your pronouns, explain why certain jokes are not harmless, or minimize what has happened to you.
Your treatment is individualized. Together, we will focus on the specific areas that matter most for you, which may include:

Living in a body or identity that is often misunderstood or rejected can create ongoing stress. This can show up as anxiety, hyper-vigilance, difficulty relaxing, or feeling like you are always “on guard.”
In therapy, we pay attention to how this stress has shaped your beliefs about yourself and others. Together we work toward:
If your identity has felt unsafe or “too much” for others, it may feel risky to be emotionally open, even with people you care about. Many clients describe feeling cut off from their own needs or unsure how to trust closeness.
We will slow down, make space for your feelings, and practice staying connected to yourself instead of shutting down, numbing out, or leaving your body when things get hard.
Avoidance is a common way to cope with fear of rejection. This might look like staying out of relationships, hiding parts of yourself at work or with family, or avoiding certain spaces in Orange County that don’t feel safe.
In therapy, we gently examine what avoidance is protecting you from and what it is costing you. From there, we can create realistic steps toward more authentic connection and community, at a pace that respects your nervous system.

I see clients by appointment at both of my Orange County offices:
Telehealth sessions are also available for adults anywhere in California who prefer online therapy or who cannot easily travel to the office.
If you’re considering therapy and unsure whether it is the right time, that is a good place to begin. You do not have to have everything sorted out before reaching out for support.
